CRPG Criticism
blog my favorite CRPGS in chronological order, trace developments in what makes a good rpg

I like that fallout NV incorporates skills into plot/conversation options more than 3 did (3 was a nice start but not enough to make skills as meaningful as in NV)

more on Bruno
Yates' hermeticism and hermeticist arguments amazing speculative feats, but lack detailed-enough understanding of scholastic and neoplatonic metaphysics of mind that Bruno was playing with. Gatti is right to read him as a scientist as he was the most advanced ASC technician using lullian memory mapping and structuralist body-building tech. He was still a deeply religious man but needed to become free of the church, anticipating Boenhoffer's post-christianity. His philosophy of mind and insights into logic were linked to Cusa basically Proclan project of doing deep metaphysical negative theology as basis of natural philosophical method. Bruno claims to have experienced spirits and is interested in angel magic, although he does not discuss summoning or conjuring, rather exploiting magic tricks and jargon for metaphysical metaphorical purposes. All magical procedures were already imaginal/visualization techniques for doing supernatural math and generating spiritualities, but Bruno used these in radical ways based on his weird philosophy and Lovecraftian obsession with "immensity" (thanks to NY review).

thomas, pd, platonism
god not composed

participant a partner in simultaneous vertical creation (not chain of causes) plotinian simplicity of pd shines thru proclan scaffold

not getting being from layers of causal story, but direct creation right here/now from God
radical presence as Being, rather than Proclan "only get being from the One" and causal distance of unparticipated; christian theurgy works better because Jesus serves as direct-making intermediary... although he is mystically associated with the henads in a new christian metaphysic mapping out reflection terminals of God's unity-presence.

renaissance magicians felt comfortable ascending their knowledge faculties into the realms of number to get power over angels because they this understanding of the opportunities of christian theurgy. Contra Yates, it was Jesus not the angelic cabala that protected them from the bad stuff. The angels were understood, from a magician's divine point of view, as available tools for experiencing the neoplatonic universe in the mystically charged philosophical imagination. Thomas' platonism worked on the divine level of God's mind alone, but the Renaissance magi believed differently than Thomas about the ramifications of the platonic universe, finding the signs of things to be presenting a much more "wet paint" scenario of god's gifts as beautiful perfections of beings, in bright psychedelic colors accompanied by visionary symbols demonstrating hoe to access all the virtues in them. Accepting the thomistic story about the being of angels provided renaissance magi with much powerful rational substance for their speculations, using kabbalistic and hermetic tools beyond the thomistic system to explore the possibilities of gaining knowledge about the essences so well sketched out by Thomas' metaphysics.
every angel having its own species sets out a space of objects as numerous as numbers. It solidifies, along with the proclan-thomistic scaffolding, the magical sense of the angels as real persons, individualized to a metaphysically exalted degree in the sense of each angel being its own unique species.

John Dee used proclan metaphysics to understand the neoplatonic theory of the ontological status of number. his scientific studies were extreme intellectual projects based both on careful, state-of-the-art experimentation and theory, in service both of egghead contemplation and natural philosophy. Having a platonic theory of angels well-elaborated in scholastic sources served for Dee as part of his vast knowledge-base, closer to the kind of orthodoxy he needed for his project of cross confessional harmony because it is the philosophical theology of a saint.

giordano bruno was forced by his metaphysical originality to locate the divine universe within, but he still found both thomism and magic worthy of deep study for methodological aids in contemplatively exploring the metaphysical spaces left to him. Like Plotinus and his followers he still locates the "highest" dimension of Being within as the One in all things, and he retains a theory of the human ability to rise above limited intellect to a neoplatonic unity, however modified in its transmogrification into the Brunian atom.

dee/proclus/cusa in euclid comment
is cabala for dee a way of measuring angels? (conference paper notes/brainstorm)

cusa's idiota de statistis experimentis (layman on statistical experience/experiment) in dee's euclid
cabala as method for doing contemplative experience of number (platonic visualization exercise)
tree of life as concrete model for noetic ascent, while meaning of gematria number data more abstract
cabala as inspiration for monas heiroglyphica method--intellectual operations as theological doctrines
optics and light metaphysics not just for thinking/praying distantly about angels, but doing science of
requires new ways of metaphorically understanding noetic activity as scientific modeling and drafting

cusa de docta ch. 1-2 why pythagorean "number"
cusa shows proclan logic behind Pseudo Dionysian negative theology which also informs Dee+Bruno
cusa "let us contract the absolute" is what Bruno does with magical speculation, Dee with maths
(Dee lacks Bruno's mistrust of certain rational processes, maths, aristotelianism, different geometries)

thesis notes
vs. the open sesame model popular with scholars of religion
PD can help us understand mechanics of magical practice-natural theology language applied to imagination helps understand evolution of magical spirituality
PD upward ecstatic movement model (with "theurgic" valences) provides a concrete and in their terms scientific model for understanding magical intentions and expectations (nothing happens "by magic" but rather by physical and spiritual laws in the proclan universe)

Agrippan virtues and PD gifts -- magician tries to absorb them better (ficino astral influences -- mistake to see as "astrological" but rather neoplatonic influx used to read and explain/justify astrological story)

chapter on proclus--explain why dynamism/power is so important to magical theories, MD on how Thomas Aquinas is a "proclan theologian" (divine ideas, ipsum esse subsistens, intellect, angels)
farinella on how bruno took proclan dynamics and applied to art of memory (clucas)

peter forshaw on khunrath's use of reuchlin -- cabala and "showing off erudition" (Reuchlin in de arte--"I could absorb so much more")

Dee- cabala as scientific instruction manual -- PD's angel texts similar function, on the same continuum of studies--perhaps worry that cabala "leads astray" being mitigated by intense interest in PD--provides christian justification for angel interests.

Proclan Cusa as background to GB and Dee (Cusa and Ficino very different authorities, but both grounded in Proclan metaphysics)

Kircher: Cabala as an antiquarian interest (at the same time that it is relevant to current theology)
new encyclopedic and comparative-religion discourses and ambitions impact reading of cabala
names of god diagram and development of PD system

PD as more of an indirect influence on 1th-18th century kabbalists? (Boehme, Van Helmont, "SWE")

magical latin: Bruno's latin as influenced by Thomas, Ficino, Cusa -- makes it easier to read? (helps to study all in parallel so as to pick up on patterns of usage?)

lazzarelli: PD as hermetic--what does this say about his understanding of hermetic? demonstrates christian value of hermetic tradition as source of PD-style theology, not magic

notes for magical/alchemical video game project
UW style video game [maybe cross with Maniac Mansion style commands, or get runesyntax to do that] needs a slightly more complex character development and conversation/plot system. (can get pretty complex and still fit on a website, unless doing 3-d environment (could do character doll system for inventory with static Zork plus graphics tile-based system, to facilitate alchemical play while staying in basically text-adventure format)

the book of divine tricks

magical grimoire in possession of character evolves as game goes on (like Diamond Age primer)
get somebody to animate text changing (experience level increase for text as well as character,
game flags system like Ultima games--conversations with the text --Librarian from Snow Crash)

but in the context of a "told from below" picture of medieval/renaissance history... play a thief involved in a thieves' guild (do gang/terrorism detective/FBI story plots with paranormal twists)
who steals a magic book intended for a magical student (ordinarily under tight security but you take advantage of chaos of invasion or something) [so the book is in "tabula rasa" form, pre-bond to the user... side effects of the magical bond with book process will cause health problems that need to be overcome, comedy, etc. (increased lust, etc.)]

magic system progress keyed into in-game conversation and text... forms of learning and experience beyond killing monsters. have to follow allegorical instructions to do alchemy.
(and later in game have to follow allegorical spiritual alchemy instructions-hack astral body)

UW style inventory, invent lots of items for alchemical laboratory, functions, click-use system

"art of memory system" chapter of book -- Yatesian Bruno and all other appropriations as real
talismanic value of things memorized, set into spinning wheels that enact logic of magic
(learn to do U8 style sorcery placing objects in astral temple geometrically to infuse virtues)

one use of "heavenly palace" mysticism: teleport

Hebrew letters like UW Runestones, except more complicated grammer of invocations.
excerpts from Bible verses do magical powers that must be reverse-engineered as

one path of learning is mystical/magical hermeneutics, which will set off flags of new possible interpretations of text (leading to development of more advanced magical grammars)

egyptian god forms become hypertext, clicking on the different gods will turn on powers (w. cost)
description/animation of lights coming off text, character getting sucked into, otherwise modified by the text (Narnia--Voyage of the Dawn Treader scene with the kid and the magic book)

various games involve building and destroying things in the real world, with in-text consequences (making powers available by attaching metaphorically to symbolic objects/events like temples or battles, think Star Trek TNG episode Darmok at Tanagra... ______ when the walls fell, gilgamesh and enkidu at uruk: cultural traditions give proper names metaphorical resonance, this should be built-in to an evolving grammar of magic in a game that revolves around a story filled with meaningful events)

might and magic quest and character development system a similar example to UW-style, but without conversation system. UW conv. pretty basic, U4-6 conversation system actually more effective in some ways because player types own questions and responses... problem is making it accept flexible input... merge the two by having suggested responses but one can type in own tries
